Maximising the IMPACT of university R&D/IP

The Lab to IPO Pathway gives universities a standard system, tools, processes and methodology to help TTOs and commercial teams improve decision making and reporting, align better with research publication/peer review processes, protect IP, and secure investment.

Technology Transfer Offices and commercialisation teams across the UK and Europe have several important challenges to deal with

Disclose & Validate ALL projects

No matter what the project or its stage of preparedness

An easy to use process enables more disclosures from more researchers to be put forward, aligned with timelines to publish, supporting decision making, and simplifying the prioritisation process.

Putting projects on the right path whilst protecting IP

Determining the direction of travel is not always straightforward and simple.

Clear, well documented roadmaps are essential: based on evidence, supported by people who have been there before, know what they are doing and protected by systems and processes.

Commercialising and/or generating IMPACT fairly & equitably

A clear rationale for decision making, action, funding and equity early on is critical.

Proving and recording the contributions of individuals, teams, the university and the founders means that these positions are protected while attracting new investors.

Patient, timely and available capital

Ensuring there is a steady, reliable and timely source of capital ensures success.

Capital must be aligned with the commercial, environmental and/or societal roadmaps and direction of travel; key milestones ensure goals are hit and progress is made.

Disclose & Validate, Evaluate, Launch, Fund and List on one platform

Platform benefits

  • Disclose & Validate very early stage projects (even before TRL1)
  • Evaluate the viability (commercial, environmental, societal) and IMPACT
  • Launch a spin out, licence or joint venture in good time based on sound reasoning
  • Fund the project through patient, timely and smart capital from the PIPE’s own fund
  • List the new proposition on the PIPExchange where it can continue to raise capital
  • Consult - access PIPE expertise and our network of consultants to define TTO best practices, processes and so on

  • Standard & Systematic

    PIPE Systems

From simple user registration to project Disclosure & Validation, the PIPE Platform and Lab to IPO Pathway is designed to support the TTO and commercial team make better, standardised and systematic decisions.  From the use of AI to the presentation of outcomes in a standard, easy to understand format, the PIPE Platform is a novel approach to university R&D/IP impact creation.

To patent or not to patent?

One of the first steps in protecting IP that TTOs and commercial teams take is to consider the possibility of a patent registration.  However, this process is time consuming and costly.

Researchers often want to progress the publication of findings quickly, whilst the TTO or commercial teams has an obligation to their University and the protection of IP where possible..

In addition, many ideas and innovations can not be patented or should not be patented at such an early stage, and so there is a conflict between the researcher who may wish to go faster, the TTO or commercial team who wish to avoid risk and the understanding that future investors or commercial partners will require a patent.

PIPE is designed to fix this.
